What is a Hydrocarbon?

Hydrocarbons refer to a group of organic compounds which consist entirely of hydrogen and carbon.  The oil and gas industry focuses on the discovery and recovery of a particular set of hydrocarbons from deposits in the earth.  Hydrocarbons are refined and used as a combustible fuel source, or used in creating plastics, paraffin, waxes and solvents.

How it’s important to us

Our O&G clients are engaged in the finding and producing of hydrocarbons.  Typically this will be referred to as “oil” and “gas” (hence the O&G).  Petroleum refers to hydrocarbons extracted in liquid form, while natural gas (primarily methane) refers to those extracted in gaseous form.
